Well, This Looks a Little Different!

It took longer than I expected but I’ve switched blogging tools.

It’s a bit of a Gilligan’s Island at the moment with the occasional raw and unformatted bits of text, the occasional link that’s broken, possibly kerfuffled RSS feeds, and… Ok, throw in my usual fractured grammar and syntax and I guess the old version was also primitive as can be.

But still. I take comfort in knowing that while Copernicus’s original heliocentric model was just as complicated as Ptolemy’s 1400-year-old Earth-centric model, each refinement of Copernicus made astronomy simpler whereas each refinement of Ptolemy’s just made it harder. And, I dearly hope, the same will be true for this site.

I’ve actually been meaning to do this for years. I was prompted, though, by a request from another blogger who asked if I knew of a way to have collaborative conversations instead of the more conventional blog-comment ping pong. I said “why yes, the solution is simple and obvious.” Only three and a half months later I can finally run back into the room and say “I was right, it is simple and obvious! :-)

Something else that’s been bugging me, a lot, is that while this is a sex blog I haven’t been terrifically sexy lately. In part it’s because over time you sort of say what you want to say about the joys of sex and relationships but the social, political, and interpersonal obstacles never go away. But in part it’s also been that as more and more of my readers came from serious, social, political, and interpersonal sources I felt less and less comfortable salting things up with anecdotes, imagination, and, especially, photographs. At the moment the new system hides most of the salty imagery but unlike the old system this will eventually make it possible to let viewers opt-in. The old alternative was simply to stay out.

More later. For now, though, it’ll all take a little getting used to. And a lot of tidying up. I appreciate your patience.

Oh, I’d also appreciate your comments. It too is a new system and one I hope works for you.

Quick note: at least for now when you comment you have to put “http://...” in front of your URL.
Update Also, let me know if the reCaptcha feature is still as eerily apt as it was with the old static-page version.

Ok, it looks as though the new system remembers your contact information. Nearly every time I updated the old software it would lose track of the cookies. Fingers crossed.

On the downside my reCaptcha says “some dampen.” We’ll see.

Looks good to me! And I’m really just commenting to test the new system…

[Thanks, Hubman! —fl]

Hmmm, “some dampen” is only a problem in certain contexts – like if one’s enthusiasm is dampened. But surely you’ve still capable of imagining its potential upside, even if you’re finally making the erotic stuff opt-in?

Anyway, I do have a serious comment: The width of the main text column makes it fairly hard to read. Maybe I’m just getting old but the text is much harder to follow than on your old site – and no, it’s not your proofreading, it’s really a layout issue. The letters also look more gray than black, which is similarly hard on my old eyes – I can’t tell if it’s actually not black, or if it just contrasts less strongly with the background.

On my Recatpcha: I got “mutual sukiyaki,” which I suppose could be very interesting … but it would take some imagination.

Yeah, the width is an issue. Both font size and foreground/background color is another. The new system is visually delightfully flexible and I’ll be fiddling with it quite a bit, not just for readability but usability as well. One thing that’s pretty important, I think, is it’s got templates ADA visual-impairment/machine-readability for folks with really bad eyes. And templates for hand-held and iPhone screens. Which I’ll turn on after I figure out some of the bigger legacy issues from the big import. Thanks, Sungold. -fl

One more thing: When I went to hit “submit,” I only saw a button labeled “save,” and this was confusing – I wasn’t sure if I was saving the comment for me to continue later, or actually posting it.

Thanks for the feedback, Sungold. I agree “submit” would be preferable usability-wise. If I can figure out how to change the button text I will… but not right away.

I’ve turned off the mandatory preview button by the way.

(Oh yeah, and since pages are now generated on the fly I wonder if reCaptcha will still be as magically apt as it was with the old static-pages version. Guess we’ll see.)

Thanks,

fl

I can’t speak to your platform and formatting issues since I’ve never been here before today, but I like the content. I like it a lot. I liked even more your reasons for blogging about sex and I agree wholeheartedly. Even more than that, I agree with the Butch Hancock quote. I grew up in Texas and even went to college in Lubbock (and have seen Butch in concert — he rocks, truly) and I can attest to the truth of his assessment. I’ll be a frequent visitor from now on.

I just found this blog a few days ago and have to tell you that it has been most enjoyable. I obviously haven’t had a chance to get through the entire thing yet…..but what I have has been thought provoking, fun, and in many cases enlightening.

You’re a very creative photographer as well…. I added you as a contact in Flickr, but am not sure what else needs to be done to view your “other” photos….if you don’t mind, I would love to have the privilege of viewing those as well.

In the mean time….keep on blogging and i’ll keep on reading!!!!

Thanks, Mike.

Over the years Flickr has gotten more and more restrictive, and I never really liked its “friends category” approach. So one potential benefit of the new system is I can start hosting my own photos instead of relying on a 3rd party’s idea of how I should organize them.

Hmm…Drupal, eh? Looks good, appearance-wise.

I hate captchas. Don’t they make a spam-filter widget or anything for Drupal? The one I have for Wordpress works without a hitch, and my guests never have to fill out a captcha.

Yeah, I agree, change the main copy to black.

But overall, good change, much more navigable now, and grats on getting things moved and working.

Yup, I’ve got most of the “emergency-level” fixes made — for instance news feeds now work and links to the old static pages now redirect to the new dynamic ones — and while there are still plenty of mid- and low-level fixes that have to happen (especially on the administration side) I can think more about how the darn thing ought to look.

And yes, it’s not Wordpress. Which I’ve tried migrating to on and off for years. But there’s just more you can do with Drupal. Including migrate genuinely crufty old content from my nearly five-year-old MovableType system.

As for spam control, I may start looking at some of the less-intrusive tools. But not this week!

Thanks, Lynn.

I agree with the comments about the text width/density, but it sounds like just “furniture rearranging” that will occur as you settle int to the new place :) I like the new layout and the goal of more interactivity/collaboration.

BUT...let me put in a HUGE plug for keeping your own style, voice, humor, pics, etc, which is what makes this such a thought-provoking place and FUN to hang out and read. Words on a screen are easy to find online, but those words that let the person behind them shine through is what forges a connection with another human being on the other end of the intertubes. There are lots of sex and gender blogs but fig, I think the voice of the “regular guy”, the kind who thinks critically and questions the cultural scripts from the life experience of being a thoughtful guy in our culture, is rare and crucial to keeping the conversations going. There are lots of academics and activists writing and we need their work too, but it’s a mosaic more than a hierarchy. And I also recognize that putting yourself and your inner thoughts out there in a personal way like you do is a bit daunting/scary/self-revealing and sometimes tiring!

Conversations about gender and sex like this, like the kind you’d have after a few beers with a mixed group of friends, or around a kitchen table after a big meal, are what plant the seed of awareness and seeing things from another’s perspective. Keep up the good work and don’t go changing anything but the decor ;)

Thanks for your kind words, Kaija! I’m glad you like my style because I’m not sure how to do it differently. (You should see my cover letters for job applications! :-)) —fl

Amen. brother! I have the same problem(?) when I write application materials, cover letters, personal statements, etc…I have my style and I can formalize it somewhat and make it fit the generally expected conventions but it’s still a bit quirkily me…but I think that’s a good filter! I’ve been on committees that reviewed job/scholarship/grant apps and honestly, after looking at hundreds of them, they all look alike until something unique and personal jumps out to differentiate. To thine own self be true!

Speaking of writing styles, Kaija, don’t you have a blog somewhere? Feel free to add the URL when you leave comments. —fl

Left nav bar is huuuuge, especially since it is largely empty. Link list is eteeeeernal. Whole page width situation requires adjustment. Overall it all feels smoother and more modern – I can tell the tool is a better tool, but it has more work to perform to produce a better product.

Yes the sidebars are large. (I don’t know if you’ve seen them on a hand-held browser yet but yow! No room in the middle for actual posts!) And yes, I’m going to redo the theme in a bit — maybe starting tomorrow though I probably won’t roll it out for a bit longer.

Thanks for the feedback, Anonymous.

Couple of things I’m still missing: – a way to navigate the archives – a way to get to Kochanie’s stuff. I know she’s not actively blogging here anymore but right now there’s no sign that she ever did.

In the new system “URLs” to posts are really just aliases to database records so there’s not the intrinsic structure for archives there was. So I’ve got to figure out a tidy way to make the old categories and date-based archives navigatable without just firehosing 800 posts onto a single page.

One nice thing, though, the new system is much more naturally multi-user oriented than a lot of blog software so guest accounts and guest posting, including for Kochanie, ought to be a lot easier to setup and sort through. I’ve got to figure out how to display that though. (She’s still got an account on the new system but you’re right that she hasn’t posted for a while.)
